The 17 Day Diet -- Days 29-31

1/29/11

Very excited today! I may not have lost a ton of weight, but I can finally (finally!) fit into a pair of jeans I bought in 2009--that were too snug at the time--but that I got because I was losing weight on Atkins and I thought optimistically I would fit in them "really soon". They still had the tags on them. That's proof right there that the diet is working. That's not bad for 29 days of hard work! For fun, I tried on a bunch of other clothes in my closet, and I'm able to wear most of the clothes I was wearing post-Sam. I am not, however, anywhere close to where I was pre-Sam. Trying on those clothes was just depressing. But motivating. It's good to have a goal to shoot for. I think I'm going to start taking a weekly spinning class with my neighbor, too. I like the idea of spending time with my friends at the gym. My workout schedule is starting to take shape, too. Mon: body sculpt, Tues: run, Wed: body sculpt, Thurs: spinning, Fri: body flow (if I ever make it to that class--the intention is there), Sat and Sun: run.

Breakfast
hot water w/lemon
light yogurt
apple
Lunch
chicken salad @ Chipotle w/peppers, onions, hot(!) and mild salsa, sprinkle of cheese
baby carrots
Dinner
chicken marinated in Ken's lite asian sesame with ginger soy dressing
sliced tomatoes sprinkled w/ feta cheese w/ oil and balsamic vinegar
broccoli

This weekend we've eaten out a lot more often that we typically do (blame an awesome Indian restaurant we found!), but I feel like I've done a really good job sticking to appropriate foods/portion sizes (except for eating buckets of vegetables at the buffet today). I'm excited about moving on to the third phase in 4 days, and being able to eat grains, starches, etc. regularly. Eating starches makes it possible to be more flexible. I think the virus is finally gone. It'll be nice to get back into my workout groove this week--except we're supposed to get hit by two major snowstorms on Tuesday and Wednesday--so I may not be going anywhere...

Breakfast
hot water w/lemon
sugar free oatmeal
light yogurt
apple
Lunch
(Indian buffet! Yum!)
Chicken Tikka Masala (2 servings)
Chicken w/ peppers and onions (1 serving)
Salad w/ yogurt dressing
spinach w/ lentils (1 serving prob = 1/4 C lentils)
spicy cabbage
2 T of rice pudding (I figured that 1/4 C lentils+1/4 C rice would equal my remaining 1/2 C natural starch)
Dinner
hamburger w/ marinara sauce sprikled with feta
broccoli

1/31/11

Imagine me doing the happy dance this morning! I stepped on the scale and I've finally left the 170s behind! I was down 1.3 lbs and am 169 now! Yeah! I haven't weighed in the 160s since 2009. Yeah me! On another note, today being the 31st, it occurs to me that I've only been on this diet a month. On the one hand, it feels like an eternity. But on the other hand, in the grand scheme of things, that's no time at all. I was reading an article yesterday on CNN titled Why You're Not Seeing Fitness Results This Year, and in it, there was a quote that (speaking of New Years Resolutionists) really stuck with me:
"Within the first three weeks, they fade away from the goal or the intensity of what they're committing to," Littrel said. "From what I see, it takes 28 days to create a habit. They're quitting before the 21st day."

I'm proud of myself for committing to this fully for 31 days. The diet and the workouts do feel like habits now, and even though I felt discouraged a lot of time by what I thought was a lack of momentum, I've actually made steady progress. I got to the gym again today for the first time in a week and it felt good.

Breakfast
light yogurt
apple
Lunch
chicken
brussels sprouts w/sprinkle of feta
*1 cheese ravioli square and a spoonful of tomato sauce (I couldn't help myself from sampling the cheesy yumminess I was serving the boys for lunch)
Snack
baby carrots
Dinner
chicken marinated in Ken's lite asian sesame with ginger soy dressing
Dessert (had a major chocolate craving)
*4 M&Ms
*mug of diet (25 calorie) cocoa

*Yes, I was a little bit naughty today. But at least it was just a little bit. Calorically, I didn't go crazy. Especially since I didn't eat my second fruit or probiotic servings today--and having to write it down kept me from splurging even more.
