Resolutions--2011 Version

I haven't done real well making resolutions in the past. My track record is dismal, actually. But maybe that's because I was trying to accomplish too much at once. Maybe the key is to set the bar really low. Keep things simple. Set one goal and go with it.

This year I've come to the sad conclusion that, whether I like it or not, my first, and possibly, only priority must be losing weight and getting in shape. I've come up with a lot of excuses for why I couldn't quite get my act together up til now, but the time for excuses has passed. There's absolutely no reason why now isn't the perfect time to get it together--especally since Tom and I have a 10th anniversry cruise to Bermuda planned for April and I want to look like this:

My plan of attack is two-fold. First of all, I'll be starting yet another diet on January 1st--this one more realistic than others I've tried in recent memory. It's called the 17 Day Diet and was created by an actual physician, Dr. Mike Moreno, in California. I saw the book profiled on the Dr. Phil show and ordered it right away, because it's exactly the way I've been wanting to eat, without knowing how to do it. The diet consists primarily of lean meat, vegetables, fruit, and plain yogurt. It's pretty strict, but dietarily sound, and sticks to whole, unprocessed foods. There are four phases to the diet, each lasting for 17 days, and each phase is slightly dfferent, never allowing your body to adjust to any one way of eating for long. It's low(er) carb, but allows for yogurt and fruit from the get-go (and yogurt cravings were always my downfall doing Atkins) so I should be able to do this one without completely losing my mind. And once you reach your goal weight, thi diet allows you to eat whatever you want 3x on the weekends.The diet book also comes with a DVD of 17 minute workouts (which the doctor says you should do twice a day--once in the morning and once in the evening). All of this is certainly doable, even in my permanently exhausted state.

The other part of my plan for 2011 is to run (or otherwise crawl/limp/heave myself through) a 5K. I'm not sure I'll ever take to running, but I want to try it at least once because it's nothing like what people would expect me to do, and I want to prove to myself that I can do something out of character. I'm not sure how long it will take me to train. But I have a year, right?

As I mentioned before, getting my weight/health in order is my only priority for the time being. That means that writing is going to be put on the back burner until I lose the weight. So this writing blog is turning (temporarily) into a diet and exercise blog. Bear with me. I'll be back. But I can't use writing as an excuse for not working out anymore, since I'm not actually doing much of either. Writing is going to become the light at the end of the workout tunnel, so to speak--something I can look forward to once I've reached my goals.
