In all honestly, I really thought the baby had to be a girl. This pregnancy was entirely different from the one with Sam, and I just thought there had to be a reason for that. But the ultrasound was pretty clear and John August wasn't modest.
We're naming John after Tom's grandfather and great-grandfather. It seemed only fair since Sam was named after my grandfather. For a while we were torn between John August and William August, but John won out. Tom's grandfather, John, was a really interesting person - an accordian player who gave lessons to pay his way through college. He ended up with a PhD in Chemistry, and by all accounts was very much like Tom temperment-wise. It seemed appropriate to honor him in this way.
